March 2nd and 3rd - A nil-all draw at Everton felt like a defeat as misfiring Liverpool surrendered top spot to Man City. Chances were few and fair between with Mo Salah missing two great opportunities. Everton stood firm and deserved their point, with a couple of half chances themselves to snatch it towards the end. Man City took top spot back with their second one-nil win of the week. Riyad Mahrez scored the only goal in their one-nil win away to Bournemouth. With nine games each left, City now hold a one-point lead. The battle for the top four intensified. Man United regained fourth place with a three-two win at home to Southampton. United came from behind with two goals from Romelu Lukaku proving the difference, even allowing for a late penalty miss from Paul Pogba. Arsenal picked up a point in the North London derby. Aaron Ramsey's opener was cancelled out by a penalty by Harry Kane. Pierre Emerick Aubamayang then missed a spot kick in the last minute which could have given the three points to the Gunners. Chelsea won two-one at Fulham on Sunday to keep their top four ambitions alive. Jorginho's goal proved the difference in that London Derby. At the bottom, it looks like the final relegation spot is the only one decided at this stage. Cardiff City occupy that spot after a two-nil defeat at Wolves. Brighton's one-nil win at home to Huddersfield moved them five points clear of the drop zone. They were the only team towards the bottom to pick up points with defeats for Newcastle (at West Ham) and Burnley (versus Crystal Palace) leaving both sides firmly in the relegation battle. Graham Goodwin is the early pacesetter in the March competition with 66 points. He's four points clear of Andy Dunne with Gerry Draper a further point back. Full details below: |
City regain top spot.... No way past.... |
March 9th and 10th - Man City and Liverpool kept up their relentless pursuit of honours with both sides winning this weekend. A Saturday evening victory at Watford sent City four points clear. Luck was on their side as they broke the deadlock shortly after half time with an offside goal. Raheem Sterling then went on to complete his hat-trick before Watford pulled one back late on. Liverpool had to come from behind to beat Burnley at Anfield. Kieran Westwood opened the scoring direct from a corner with the match officials failing to spot Allison being held down by the Burnley attackers. The Reds responded in defiant fashion though with two tap ins from Firmino and two from Mane closing the gap to just one point again. If Liverpool win at Fulham next weekend they'll go top again with City not playing due to FA Cup committments. A few weeks ago Tottenham were talking up their chances of winning the title. Now they're involved in a dogfight for fourth spot after losing at Southampton. The hosts came from two-one down to win that one despite Harry Kane's opener. Arsenal moved to within a point of their North London rivals with a big win at home to Man United. Goals from Xhaka and Aubameyang brought United back down to earth with a bump after their midweek European exploits. Chelsea needed an injury time equaliser from Eden Hazard to earn a point at home to Wolves. Their game in hand against Brighton will be vital to that top four race. At the bottom, there were some big wins recorded. Newcastle came from two down at home to Everton to win three-two. Ayoze Perez scored twice in that one as Rafa Benitez got one over on the small club. Brighton moved five points clear of the drop zone with a two-one win at Crystal Palace - Anthony Knockaert scored the winner in that one. Cardiff also kept in touch - they beat West Ham two-nil thanks to goals from Junior Hoilett and Victor Camarasa. Brendan Rodgers first game in the dugout at Leicester saw them beat Fulham three-one. Bournemouth picked up three points with a two-nil win at soon to be relegated Huddersfield. Graham Goodwin maintained his lead in the monthly contest - he's still four points clear with John Brophy in second place. Andy Dunne, Gerry Draper and Roisin Joyce complete the top five so far. March 16th and 17th - Only five games took place with the FA Cup Quarter Finals also on. There was late drama at Craven Cottage as Liverpool eventually found a way past Fulham to go two points clear at the top. Sadio Mane continued his recent hot scoring streak, firing the Reds into the lead. However, a mix up between van Dijk and Allison allowed Ryan Babel (ex Liverpool) to equalise. Like 2014, it took a late penalty for Liverpool to pick up the points, converted by James Milner (ex Man City) inside the final ten minutes. Chelsea's top four hopes suffered a bit setback following a two-nil defeat at Everton. Goals from Richarlison and Sigurdsson leave Chelsea three points behind Arsenal in fourth place with an inferior goal difference of seven. Game of the weekend was at the London Stadium where West Ham came from two-down to beat Huddersfield four-three. Javier Hernandez scored the last two goals for the Hammers in that one. Bournemouth and Newcastle shared the points after a two-all draw at the Vitality Stadium. Josh King scored twice for Bournemouth with Salomon Rondon and Matt Ritchie scoring for the visitors. Harry Maguire was sent off for Leicester after just four minutes at Burnley but they still won two-one with Wes Morgan notching the winner in injury time. With not too many points up for grabs this weekend, Graham Goodwin retains top spot in the March competition. Roisin Joyce has climbed to second place just three points off the lead. John Brophy is a further point back with Gary McGurk and Chris Keohan completing the top five. Full details below: |
More late drama for the Reds at Fulham.... Merseyside 2 West London 0.... |
March 30th and 31st - Liverpool top the table going into April after a dramatic win over Spurs at Anfield. A last minute own goal by Toby Alderwereild saw the Reds return to the top of the table. Roberto Firmino had put the hosts ahead before Lucas Moura equalised. Spurs looked the more likely winner until Lloris fumbled Salah's header onto Alderweireld's shin and it crept over the line. With the room for error being virtually non-existent in this title race, this could be another pivotal moment for Jurgen Klopp's side. Man City had regained the lead in less dramatic fashion on Saturday, scoring two goals without reply at Fulham through Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero. They'll go back top again on Wednesday night if they beat Cardiff at the Etihad. The race for the top four sees just one point separating four clubs. Spurs' defeat leaves them in third place on goal difference. A victory for Arsenal over Newcastle on Monday night will see them go ahead of their North London rivals. Man United beat Watford two-one on Saturday with goals from Rashford and Martial to go fourth. Chelsea won in controversial circumstances at Cardiff on Sunday. Neil Warnock's side lead going into the last five minutes but an offside goal from Cezar Azpilicueta and a header from Ruben Loftus-Cheek broke Welsh hearts. Hopefully they get some luck in their next game ; ) Huddersfield's relegation has been coming for a while and it was confirmed following defeat at Crystal Palace on Saturday. Burnley's win at home to Wolves means it's likely Fulham will be confirmed for the drop next. Southampton also picked up a big three points, beating south coast rivals one-nil at the Amex. In a game which can probably now be filed under "end of season", Everton beat West Ham two-nil at the London Stadium. Graham Goodwin held on for victory in the March competition despite a late surge by Liam Keohan and Roisin Joyce. Graham had the bare minimum margin of just one point in the end - full details below: |
