Darren Bent - Tottenham Hotspur Fourteen Premiership goals for relegated Charlton Athletic last season was a great achievement in a struggling team. As soon as the season was over speculation started as to where Bent would start the new season. Linked with moves to Liverpool and Man United but it was Tottenham who spent £16.5 million. In five seasons at Ipswich town he scored 47 goals in 122 league appearances. He then moved to Charlton for £2.5 million in 2005. 31 goals in 68 appearances for the Addicks saw Martin Jol splash the cash in June 2007. Dimitar Berbatov - Tottenham Hotspur Berbatov's debut season at White Hart Lane saw him net 12 goals in 33 appearances. He became the most expensive Bulgarian player in history when he signed for £10.9 million in May 2006. Tottenham signed him after five successful seasons in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen when he bagged 68 goals in 152 Bundesliga appearances. Success was not just confined to the league - in 57 appearances for the Bulgarian national team he has scored 37 goals. Berbatov was one of only three players included in the PFA Team of the Year that didn't play for champions Man United in 2006-2007. Didier Drogba - Chelsea As famous for his diving as his goalscoring, Drogba has proved that he has an eye for goals. He was Premiership top scorer last season with 21 goals. In three seasons with Chelsea he has scored 42 goals in 91 league games. Prior to moving to Stamford Bridge the Ivory Coast international was a big hit in France - in 2003-2004 he scored 19 goals in 35 appearances for Olympique de Marseille. He also had a great campaign in the UEFA Cup which alerted Chelsea to his talents - £24 million was the eventual transfer fee. Drogba is also captain of the national team of the Ivory Coast. Andy Johnson - Everton Johnson announced his arrival at Goodison Park last season with two goals and instant hero status in the Merseyside Derby. Despite suffering a few injuries, he still managed 11 goals in 32 Premiership appearances. Johnson was Everton's most expensive signing ever when he signed for £8.6 million in the summer of 2006 from Crystal Palace. His record of 74 goals in 140 games for Crystal Palace proved he could compete at all levels. He made the breakthrough into the England squad, making his debut against Holland in February 2005. Benni McCarthy - Blackburn Rovers One of the shrewdest signings last summer was the purchase of Benni McCarthy. Blackburn manager Mark Hughes paid just £2.5 million to bring the South African international from Porto to Ewood Park. A return of 19 goals in 36 Premiership appearances proves it was money very well spent. McCarthy scored 46 goals in 86 appearances in five seasons at Porto. Before that he played with Celta Vigo in Spain scoring 10 goals in 65 games. He had one very successful season at Ajax where he scored 21 goals in 36 matches. Will McCarthy prove to be a one-season wonder in the Premiership or will he carry his goalscoring form into 2007-2008? |
